Club History

Fadó, Fadó

Football was practised in the Bennekerry area for about twenty years before the setting up of Palatine Club in 1909. Ballyhade Slashers existed for three years, 1889, 1890 and 1891. Ballyhade is a townsland adjoining Palatine village. Burton Hall Juveniles played a game against Grange in 1890 while Bennekerry club was also active in the early 1900s, having applied for affiliation to the County Convention in 1889, even though this application was not accepted because of unanswered questions re number of players available. But a Bennekerry team took part in a tournament game in 1907. A team from Ardnehue ceased to exist in 1905 even though we only know this because of the tragic death of one of its players when playing for Tullow in 1905.

Palatine club was founded in 1909 with a notice in the "Nationalist" of Ist May 1909 announcing a practice session on the Sunday. The Palatine Minors played a game against Graigue Minors on the 23rd May 1909 and the Juniors played against Borris on 25th July 1909. So the foundations were laid for a hundred years of football and we now embark on the second hundred years.

The game of hurling was fostered with the setting up of a hurling team in 1963. This led to success in the Minor, Junior, Intermediate grades and, in 1972, to the winning of the Senior Hurling Championship. The Intermediate team now flies the flag for the Club.
